INDIAN WEAVERS
Weavers, weaving at break of day,
Why do you weave a garment so gay?
Blue as the wing of a bluebird wild,
We weave the robes of a new-born child.
Weavers, weaving at fall of night,
Why do you weave a garment so bright?
Like the plumes of a peacock, purple and green,
We weave the marriage-veils of a queen.
Weavers, weaving solemn and still,
What do you weave in the moonlight chill?
White as a feather and white as a cloud,
We weave a dead man's funeral shroud.
                                      -Sarojini Naidu

Q: Read the questions given below and write the option you consider the most appropriate in your answer sheet.

Reading Comprehension (Unseen Poem - 3)

CBSE Class 10/9/8 - English - Reading Comprehension (Unseen Poem - 3) (#cbseNotes)

Question: Read the poem below:

When storm‐clouds rumble in the sky and
June showers come down
The moist east wind comes marching over the heath
to blow its bagpipes amongst the bamboos
The crowds of flowers come out of a sudden
from nobody knows where,
and dance upon the grass in wild glee.

Mother, I really think the flowers go to school underground
They do their lessons with doors shut,
and if they want to come out to play before it is time,
their master makes them stand in a corner.
When the rains come they have their holidays.

Branches clash together in the forest
and the leaves rustle in the wild wind,
the thunder‐clouds clap their giant hands and
the flower children rush out in dresses of
pink, yellow and white.

Do you know, mother, their home is in the sky,
Where the stars are.

Haven’t you seen how eager they are to get there ?
Don’t you know why they
are in such a hurry ?
Of course, I can guess to whom they raise their arms
they have their mother
as I have my own .

Rabindranath Tagore

Marie Curie was one of the most accomplished scientists in history. Together with her husband, Pierre, she discovered radium, an element widely used for treating cancer and studied uranium and other radioactive substances. Pierre and Marie’s amicable collaboration later helped to unlock the secrets of the atom.

Marie was born in 1867 in Warsaw, Poland, where her father was a professor of Physics. At an early age, she displayed a brilliant mind and blithe personality. Her great exuberance for learning prompted her to continue with her studies after high school. She became disgruntled, however, when she learned that the university in Warsaw was closed to women, Determined to receive a higher education, she defiantly left Poland and in 1891 entered the Sorbonne, a French university, where she earned her master’s degree and the doctorate in Physics.
