Food is a combination of various substances that is taken into the body for nourishment and living.

There is a lot of variety in the food eaten in different regions of India.

The main sources of our food are plants and animals.

Grains, cereals, vegetables and fruits are plant sources of food.

Animals provide us milk, eggs and meat.



Animals which eat only plants are called herbivores.

Animals which eat only animals are called carnivores.

Animals which eat both plants as well as other animals are called omnivores.

Various parts of plants are used as food.

Leaves of spinach, mint, basil (tulsi) are used as food.

Roots of radish, carrot are edible.

Stems of potato, ginger are used as food.

Seeds of mustard and cereals are used as food.

Flowers and their nectar are used in the form of honey.

Autotrophs are also known as producers of food.
Plants make their food from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight through the process of photosynthesis.

Animals that feed or eat flesh of dead and decaying animals’ body are called scavengers.

Examples of herbivores are: cows, buffalos, goats, giant panda etc.

Examples of carnivores are: lions, tigers, hyneas, foxes, polar bear etc.

Examples of omnivores are: humans, pigs, bears, squirrels, rats etc.
