From Cotton Boll to Fabric


Question 1: What is fibre?

Answer: Fibre is a thread like a strand from which yarn is made.


Question 2: What is yarn?

Answer: Yarn is a long continuous length of interlocked fibre which is woven or knitted for making garments.


Question 3: What is spinning?

Answer: Spinning is the process of twisting fibres by hand or using a machine, to obtain thread or yarn.


Question 4: What is weaving?

Answer: The process of making fabrics by crisscrossing two sets of yarn is called weaving.





Question 5: What is Retting?

Answer: The process of soaking jute stalks in water to let these rot to remove the sticky substance and it separates fibre is called retting.



Question 6: What is ginning?

Answer: The process of separating cotton fibre from its seeds is called ginning.


Question 7: What is knitting?

Answer: The process of making woollen fabrics by interlocking loops of the yarn is called knitting.


Question 8: Give some examples of plant fibres?

Answer: Cotton, jute, coir, silk cotton, hemp, flax


Question 9: What kind of soil is needed for growing cotton plant?

Answer: Black soil


Question 10: Why cotton clothes are preferred over synthetic fibre?

Answer: Because they are natural fibre and are biodegradable. They do not cause any pollution and are also good for our skin as they have natural ventilation.



Question 11: Name some items that are made from coir, jute, hemp, silk and cotton.

Answer:
Coir: ropes, floor covering, stuffing in mattresses and pillows
Jute: jute bags, hat, slipper, rope, mat and sack
Hemp: ropes, carpets, nets, clothes and paper.
Flax: Used to make a fabric linen, rope  and quality paper.
Silk:  a fabric, sarees, necktie
cotton: Used as stuffing in pillows, sleeping bags and life jackets.



Question 12: Which fibre has resistance to fungus and mites?

Answer: Coconut fibre



Question 13: Which fibre has antibacterial property?

Answer: Hemp.



Question 14: What is the chemical composition of plant fibre?

Answer: cellulose


Question 15: What is the chemical composition of animal fibre?

Answer: protein.
