CBSE Class 9 - English (C) - The Solitary Reaper - Poem Summary (#cbseNotes)

CBSE Class 9 - English (Communicative)

Poet : William Wordsworth

Summary

The poet is out on a stroll in the mountains of Scotland. There he sees a Scottish Highland young lady, working in her field. She is alone, harvesting the grains. She is singing a despairing yet sweet song. The poet requests that bystanders should either stop or delicately pass lest she should get interrupted.

Her song resounds all through the valley. Her melody charms the poet. He compares her singing with the singing of a Nightingale and a Cuckoo bird. The girl's song  is sweeter than the melody of a Nightingale that sings to a worn out gathering of travellers in a desert garden in the forsake of Arabia. Her song is more exciting in the forlorn place like a song of Cuckoo bird which fills the noiseless Islands of Hebrides.

The poet doesn't understand the language and the words of the poem. But he finds the tune of the song is sad. It may be about some past fiasco disaster or battle or regular encounters of mankind. Be that as it may, whatever is the topic of the song, the young lady keeps on singing it. It gives the idea that the song would never end. For quite a while the poet listens to the song and then he moves away. He knows, he will cherish this moment and be mesmerised.
