Q1: Name two words which are often used for our Country.

Answer: India and Bharat are the two words which are often used for our Country.


Q2: Define Archaeology?

Answer: It is the study of the remains of the ancient past.


Q3: What are Artifacts?

Answer: The old objects like tools, weapons, pots, coins etc. which were used by early man.


Q4: Where did people live in the past?

Answer: They lived along the banks of the rivers.




Q5: What are Manuscripts?

Answer: They are the records written by hand. These were usually written on palm leaf, or on the specially prepared bark of a tree known as the birch.

Q6: What do you mean by history?

Answer:
1. History is the study of past events.
2. It is the study of events, their causes and results.
3. It is all that is remembered about the past.


Q7: Who were skilled gatherers?

Answer: Some of the earliest people who lived here were skilled gatherers,  i.e. people who gathered their food. They knew about the vast wealth of plants in the surrounding forests, and collected roots fruits and other forest produce for their food. They also hunted animals.


Q8: To how many periods history is divided into?

Answer: The long history of man is divided into two periods.
1. The prehistory period: The early period of history for which there are no written records.
2. History: A period for which we have written records.


Q9: What problems are associated with manuscripts?

Answer: As these manuscripts were written on the leaves or bark of a tree, over the years, many of these manuscripts are eaten away by insects and hence have been destroyed.

Q10: Describe the importance of history.

Answer:
1. History is a store house of wisdom of the past.
2. It informs us about the evils prevailing in the society.
3. History gives us the message of mutual tolerance and respect for each other.



Q11: Who are Historians?

Answer: Historians are the scholars who study the past and use the word source to
refer to the information found from manuscripts, inscriptions and archaeology.


Q12: Explain some archaeological sources.

Answer:
1. Tools and weapons- Man used tools for his life and social development.

2. Megaliths-These are big stones out of most burial sites.

3. Animal’s bones- These help us to know that the early man lived by the side of the lakes and rivers because bones are found there.

4. Pottery and cave paintings-These buried remains of early man belongs to the pre history period.


Q13: Where did man grow rice and wheat and barley for the first time?

Answer:
Rice- The places where rice was first grown are to the north of the Vindhyas.
Wheat and Barley- The places near Sulaiman and Kirthar hills to the North west of India (Now in Pakistan).


Q14: List the things that we can find about the past.

Answer: There are many things that we can find out.
1. What people ate?
2. The kinds of clothes they wore.
3. The houses in which they lived.
4. Which kind of games children played?


Q15: What are the contents of the Manuscripts?

Answer: These books dealt with subjects such as religious beliefs and practices, the lives of kings, medicine and science. Besides, there were epics, poems, and plays also.


Q16: Why did people travel from one part of the subcontinent to another?

Answer:
1. In search of livelihood.
2. To escape from natural disasters like floods.
3. Some people wanted to discover new things and places.


Q17: Who are known as Archaeologists?

Answer: The people who study the things related to past are known as archaeologist. They dig under the surface of the earth to find the remains of the past like tools, weapons, coins etc.


Q18: Why the word ‘pasts’ in plural is used on the title of the book?

Answer: The word pasts is used to tell the fact that past was different for different groups of people.
1. The lives of farmers were different from kings and Queens.
2. The lives of merchants were different from crafts persons.
3. People followed different practices and customs in different parts of the country.


Q19: Why do you think ordinary men and women did not generally keep records of what they did?

Answer: Ordinary men and women generally did not keep records of what they did because:

May be they were not educated enough.

They did not know how to keep records.There were just few learned men who were busy writing records for king.


Q20: What do you mean by excavation?

Answer: Excavation means to dig under the surface of the earth.
