Class 10 Maths Lab Activity: Verify Pythagoras Theorem
OBJECTIVE:
To verify Pythagoras Theorem
About Pythagoras Theorem:
Pythagoras theorem is a fundamental relation in Euclidean geometry among the three sides of a right triangle.
It states that the area of the square whose side is the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares on the other two sides.
MATERIAL REQUIRED
Chart paper, glazed papers of different colours, geometry box, scissors, adhesive.
METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION
1. Take a graph paper and draw a right angled triangle whose base is ‘4’ units and perpendicular is ‘3’ units as shown in Fig. 1.
2. Draw a square ABED at base (AB) of side '4' units as shown in Fig. 2.
3. Draw a square BCGF of side '3' units as shown in Fig 3.
4. Take a separate graph paper and draw a square of length equals to AC. Paste the square as ACHI as shown in Fig 4.
5. Draw 1unit × 1 unit squares in ABED, BCGF and ACHI and count the number of unit squares as shown in Fig 5.
OBSERVATION:
Area of ABED = 16 square units
Area of BCGF = 9 square units
Area of ACIH = 25 square units
Thus Area of ACIH = Area of ABED + Area of BCGF
⇒ 25 sq. units = 16 sq units + 9 sq. units
⇒ AC² = AB² + BC²
Hence, Pythagoras theorem is verified.
APPLICATION:
Whenever two, out of the three sides, of a right triangle are given, the third side can be found out by using Pythagoras theorem.
