Introduction:

The poet Subramania Bharati advises us to be strong in mind as well as body. The wind symbolises  the difficulties and challenges that we face in our life. The poet suggests that we should face them boldly, and stay firm in difficult situations.

Comprehension Stanzas

1.   Wind come softly.

Don't break the shutters of the windows. 

Don't scatter the papers.

Don't throw down the books on the shelf. 

Questions:

a)  Name the poem and the poet.

b)  What did the wind do with the windows?

c)  Why did the books on the shelf fall down?

d)  Write the opposite of 'gather' from the above lines.

e) Which poetic device has been used in these lines?

2. Don't throw down the books on the shelf.

There look what you did - 

You threw them all down.

You tore the pages of the books

You brought rain again.

d) How does the poet speak to the wind - in anger or with humour?

Answers:

a) The poet is disappointed because the wind does not listen to them.

b) The wind is very destructive - it threw down the books and tore their pages. It also brough rain.

c) 'You' here stands for the wind.

d) The poet resents and speaks to the wind with anger.

3.   You are very clever at poking fun at weaklings/ 

Frail crumbling houses,

crumbling doors,crumbling wood, 

crumbling bodies, crumbling lives, 

crumbling hearts,the wind god 

winnows and crushes them all. 

Questions:

a)  Who is very clever?

b)  What does the wind God do to weaklings?

c)  Why does the wind winnow and crush others?

d)  Find the opposite of'strong' from the above lines.

4. So, come,let's build strong homes,

Let's join the doors firmly. 

Practice to firm the body. 

Make the heart steadfast.

Do this, and the wind will be friends with us.

He makes strong fires roar and flourish. 

His friendship is good.

We praise him everyday.
