Q1: Define resources.

Answer: Any object or substance, living or non-living, that has utility is known as resources.


Q2: Do all resources are valuable?

Answer: Yes, all resources have some value. Some may be economically valuable, some may not. But both are important and satisfy human needs.


Q3: Name three categories resources are divided into.

Answer: Resources are categorised into natural, human made and human.

Q4: On the basis of level of their development and use, how resources are classified?

Answer: On the basis of level of their development and use, resources can be classified into actual and potential resources.


Q5: What are natural resources?

Answer: Natural resources are those resources that are drawn from nature and are used without much modification-air, water, soils, minerals are the natural resources.


Q6: Based on origin, how natural resources are classified?

Answer: Based on origin i.e. from where the resources are derived from can be divided into biotic or abiotic resources.


Q7: What are biotic resources?

Answer: Biotic resources include all the living things like plants and animals.


Q8: What are abiotic resources?

Answer: Abiotic resources are non-living things like soil, water, rock and minerals.


Q9: What are potential resources?

Answer: Potential resources are those resources whose entire quantity may not be known and these are not being used at present and could be used in the future. Tidal, solar and geothermal energy resources are potential sources waiting to be tapped.


Q10: What are actual resources?

Answer: The resources have been used by humans widely are called actual resources. Actual resources are those resources whose quantity is known. For example, rich deposits of coal in Ruhr region of Germany. Iron ore, coal, petroleum are examples of actual resources. These resources are accessible, low cost of development and utilisation and technology is economically viable to produce and use these resources.


Q11: On the basis of renewablitiy, how natural resources are categorised?

Answer: On the basis of renewablitiy, natural resources can be categorized into renewable and non-renewable resources.


Q12: What are renewable resources?

Answer: Renewable resources are those which can get renewed or replenished quickly, such as solar and wind energy.


Q13: What are non-renewable resources?

Answer: Non-renewable resources are those which have a limited stock. Once the stocks are exhausted it may take thousands of years to be renewed or replenished, such as coal, petroleum and natural gas.


Q14: What are localised resources?

Answer: Localised resources are found only in certain places, like copper and iron ore.


Q15: Is distribution of resources equal across the earth?

Answer: No. The distribution of resources is unequal across the earth.


Q16: Name any three physical factors on which the distribution of natural resources depends upon.

Answer: The distribution of natural resources depends upon number of physical factors like terrain, climate and altitude.


Q16: What are human made resources? Give examples.

Answer: The resources which are created from the natural resources by the human resources by the human beings to produce useful products are known as Human made resources. Examples are Technology, roads, machinery, vehicles, etc.


Q17: What do you mean by human resources?

Answer: Human resources refers to the number and abilities of the people. People can make the best use of nature to create more resources when they have the knowledge, skill and the technology. People are human resources.

Human resources development refers the improving the quality of people’s skill so that they are able to create more resources.
