Landmass:
A continent or other large body of land.


India Landmass:
The Indian landmass is centrally located between West and East Asia.


Tropic of Cancer:
Each of two corresponding circles on the celestial sphere where the sun appears to turn after reaching its greatest declination,marking the northern and southern limits of the ecliptic.


Island:
A piece of land surrounded by water.




Peninsula:
A peninsula is a landform surrounded by water on the majority of its border while being connected to a mainland from which it extends.


Mainland:
A large continuous extent of land that includes the greater part of a country or territory,as opposed to offshore islands and detached territories.
The India mainland comprises four regions, namely, the great mountain zone, plains of the Ganga and the Indus, the desert region and the southern peninsula.


Latitude:
The angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator,or of the equator of a celestial object,usually expressed in degrees and minutes.


Longitude:
The angular distance of a place east or west of the Greenwich meridian,or west of the standard meridian of a celestial object,usually expressed in degrees and minutes.


Longitudinal Extent of India:
 The mainland of India extends between longitudes 68°7′E and 97°25′E. The east-west extent is 2933 km in length. The longitudinal extension shows that India is located in the Eastern Hemisphere and places can be located with reference to longitudes.


Standard Meridian of India:
82°32′ E has been selected as the Standard Meridian of India.  This longitude was selected as the meridian to create the Indian Standard Time.In winter,the Indian Standard Time is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. In summer,this time difference is 4 hours and 30 minutes due to adjustments made for daylight savings time.


Protrudes:
Extend beyond or above a surface.


Maritime:
Connected with the sea,especially in relation to seaborne trade or naval matters.


Palk Strait:
Palk Strait is a strait between the Tamil Nadu state of India and the Mannar district of the Northern Province of the island nation of Sri Lanka.lt connects the Bay of Bengal in the northeast with the Palk Bay in the southwest. Gulf of Mannar is a large shallow bay forming part of the Lakshdeep Sea in the Indian Ocean. It lies between the south eastern tip of India and the west coast of Sri Lanka,in the Coromandel Coast region.


India Neighbours:
India shares its boundaries with Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan.
