Adaptations of Animals To Climate

👉Note: Here are questions and answers related to adaptations in animals to climate. You may check Q & A Part-1 for NCERT solutions and other topics.

Q1: Define adaptations in living organisms?

Answer: The characteristic features that enable a specific organism to live in a particular habitat are called adaptations. Adaptations can be physical or behavioural.

Q2: Name the categories in which climate is divided based on habitat.

Answer: Three types of climates:

1. Hot and Dry Climate - Desert

2. Hot and Humid Climate - Tropical Rainforest

3. Extremely Cold Climate - Polar region

Q3: List three salient features of Hot and Dry Climate.

Answer

  1. High temperature

  2. Scantily or no rainfall

  3. Days are hot, nights are cold.

Q4: Name two animals each that live in Polar region and Tropical rain forests.

Answer:  Polar regions: polar bear, penguin, reindeer, musk oxen.

Tropical rain forests: red-eyed frog, elephants, lion-tailed macaque.

Q5: Mention adaptive features of a camel that help it in living in the desert.

Answer: Camel - called the ship of the desert has the following adaptations:

   1. Store food in the hump that helps survive without food and water for a long time excretes very little urine and sweat.

   2. Leather skin produces little sweat.

   3. Long eyelashes, furry ears and nostrils that can be closed to protect its eyes, ears and nose from the sand during a sand storm.

   4. Long thin strong legs to keep its body away from the hot sand.

   5.  Wide padded feet allow to walk easily on sand without sinking.

Q6: Name adaptive features of the fennec fox and jackrabbit that help them survive in hot deserts.

Answer: Desert animals like fennec fox and jackrabbit have long legs, large ears and sometimes a long tail to release an excess of heat from the body.

Q7: How do kangaroo rats survive in hot desert conditions?

Answer: Kangaroo rats do not sweat or pant. They rarely drink water but obtain water from the food they eat.

Q8: Why are animals like fennec fox who live in hot desert conditions nocturnal?

Answer:  Animals like fennec fox, kangaroo rat are nocturnal – active at night to protect themselves from the heat of the day by hiding in burrows.

Q9: Define Aestivation.

Answer: Aestivation is a long sleep-like state shown by some animals during warm summer months in a hot climate. For example Desert lizard and desert snakes.

Q10: Give one example of an animal that can live both in water and on land.

Answer: Frog or any other amphibian.

Q11: What are the salient features of hot and humid climate like Tropical rainforests?

Answer: Salient features are:

   1. Found in the regions close to the equator.

   2. Have high temperature throughout the year.

   3. Receive a lot of rainfall throughout the year.

   4. Support more than half of the species of the plants and animals of the world.

Q12: What are the adapted features of animals like deer that help them protection from predators?

Answer: Deer have sharp hearing, vision and smell to detect predators. Similarly, predators also have sharp vision, smell, sharp teeth and high speed to catch and kill their preys.

Q13: Define camouflage.

Answer: The method by which organisms blend with their surroundings using colours and patterns on their skin, fur or feather is called Camouflage.

Q14: List any adapted feature of toucan bird lives in the tropical rainforest.

Answer: The toucan is a bird that has a long and large beak that helps to reach food on branches that are too small to support its weight.

Q15: List any two adapted features of monkeys that live in the tropical rainforest.

Answer: Monkeys have long limbs that help them to swing easily from one branch to branch. The tail can be curled tail to hold branches.

Q16: List adapted features of elephants that help them survive in tropical rainforests.

Answer:

  1. Have big ears which help them to hear even soft sound so to escape from their predators.

  2. Big ears also help them to release heat, keeping cool.

  3. Long trunk helps them to uproot small plants and tear off leaves and branches to eat.

  4. Tusks help for digging the ground, scraping off bark to eat and to protect them from predators.

Q17: Write any common adaptive feature of a polar bear which help in keeping it warm.

Answer: Layer of fat under the skin, thick white fur that keeps its body warm.

Detailed answer:

   1. They have two layers of fur for protection from the extreme climate.

   2. They also have a layer of fat under the skin and are very well insulated. In fact, they often take rest to avoid getting overheated

   3. The polar bear often goes for a swim to cool off on warm days.

   4. Its wide and large paws are useful for swimming as well as for walking on the snow.

Q18: Mention two adaptive features of penguin that help it in swimming.
