Class 8 Science | Summer Holiday Homework Assignment 2025-26

Q1. Which force is responsible for the downward movement of parachutes? Will the person come down with the same speed without the parachute?

Answer: The downward movement of a parachute is caused by gravity (the force that pulls everything toward Earth). However, the parachute slows the fall because of air resistance (a force that pushes upward against the falling object).

A person would fall much faster without a parachute because there’s less air resistance to balance gravity’s pull. The parachute increases air resistance, making the fall slower and safer.

Q2. Two thermocol balls held close to each other move away when they are released. Name the force which might be responsible for this phenomenon. Explain

Answer: The force responsible for the thermocol balls moving away from each other when released is the electrostatic force. When the balls are rubbed or pressed together, they gain like charges (both positively or negatively charged). Since like charges repel each other, the balls push apart when released.

Q3. Two rods, A and B, having the same weight and equal length, have different thicknesses. Rod A is thinner while Rod B is thicker. They are held vertically on the surface of the sand. Which one of them will sink more? Why?

Answer: Rod A (the thinner one) will sink deeper into the sand than Rod B (the thicker one), even though both have the same weight and length.

Pressure = Force/Area → Thinner rod has less surface area touching the sand, so the same weight is concentrated on a smaller area, creating higher pressure.

Q4. We read in newspapers that the burning of fuels is a major cause of global warming. Explain why.

Answer: Burning fuels (like coal, petrol, and diesel) releases carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gases into the air. These gases act like a thick blanket around the Earth, trapping heat from the sun that would normally escape into space.

Effects of Global Warming

  • Melting ice caps, rising sea levels, and extreme weather (like stronger storms and heat waves).
  • Using clean energy (solar, wind) reduces CO₂ and helps cool the planet.

Q5. The highlighted words in the following sentences have been jumbled up. Write them in their correct form.

(a) Loca is obtained from mines.

(b) Umpetlore is a fossil fuel.

(c) Rineryfe is a place where various fractions of petroleum are separated.

(d) Keenrose is a fuel used in jet crafts.

(e) Nutsgilh is an example of an inexhaustible natural resource.

Answer:

(a) Coal is obtained from mines.

(b) Petroleum is a fossil fuel.

(c) Refinery is a place where various fractions of petroleum are separated.

(d) Kerosene is a fuel used in jet crafts.

(e) Sunlight is an example of an inexhaustible natural resource.

Q6. Mother Earth needs your voice! Grab an A3 sheet and become a Planet Protector — design a powerful, eye-catching poster with the theme ‘Save Environment, Save Planet’. Use bold colours, striking images, catchy slogans, and your imagination to inspire others to care, act and protect our only home. Let your art speak louder than words!
