Class 9 NCERT Exemplar Problems and Solutions

Question 1: If angles A,B,C and D of a quadrilateral ABCD, taken in order, are in the ratio 3:7:6:4 then ABCD is a trapezium. Is this statement true? Give reason for your answer.

Solution: Since, the angles are in the ratio 3:7:6:4,

Let these angles be 3x,7x,6x and 4x.

∵Since sum of angles of a quadrilateral is 360°,

∴3x+7x+6x+4x=360°

⇒ 20x=360°

⇒x=18°

∴The angles are:
   ∠A=3×18°=54°,
  ∠B=7×18°=126°,
  ∠C=6×18°=108° and
 ∠D=4×18°=72°

Since ∠A+∠B=54°+126°=180°. Thus, the sum of co-interior angles is 180°formed by lines AD,BC and transversal AB, ∴, AD∥BC.

So,ABCD is a trapezium.

Hence, the given statement is true.

A simple closed figure bounded by four line segments is called quadrilateral.

The sum of (interior) angles of a quadrilateral is 360°- Angle Sum Property of Quadrilateral

A quadrilateral in which one pair of opposite sides is parallel is called trapezium.

A quadrilateral in which both pairs of opposite sides are parallel is called parallelogram.

If one of the angles of a parallelogram is right angle then it is a rectangle.

If all sides of a quadrilateral are equal then it is called rhombus.

A survey conducted by an organisation far the cause of illness and death among the women between the ages 15 - 44 (in years) worldwide, found the following figures(in %):

Answer:

(i) By representing causes on x-axis and family fatality rate on y-axis and choosing an appropriate scale (1 unit 5% far y axis), the graph of the information given above can be constructed as follows:


In the graph, the rectangle bars are of the same width and have equal spacing among them.

(ii) As shown, Reproductive health condition is the major cause of women's ill health and death worldwide.

(iii) The factors are as follows.

Answer:

In our day to day life,we can collect the following data.
1. Numbers of girl students per class in a school.
2. Number of cars of different models in our colony.
3. Production of rice in last 20 years in our country.
4. Rainfall in our city in the last 10 years.
5. Scores made by a team in Indian Premier League tournament.

Question:2

Classify the data in Q1 above as primary or secondary data.

Answer:

The information which is collected by the investigator himself with defined objectives is called as primary data whereas when the information is gathered from a source which already had stored, is called as secondary data.
Item 1 and 2 are the primary data where as the data in 3, 4 and 5 is secondary data.

Q1: ABCD is a quadrilateral in which P, Q, R and S are mid-points of the sides AB, BC, CD and DA (see the given figure). AC is a diagonal. Show that:



(i) SR || AC and SR = AC

(ii)PQ = SR

(iii)PQRS is a parallelogram.


Answer:

(i) In ▲ADC, S and R are the mid-points of sides AD and CD respectively.

In a triangle, the line segment joining the mid-points of any two sides of the triangle is parallel to the third side and is half of it.

∴ SR || AC and SR = AC ... (1)

(ii) In ▲ABC, P and Q are mid-points of sides AB and BC respectively. Therefore, by using mid-point theorem,

PQ || AC and PQ = AC ... (2)

Using equations (1) and (2), we obtain

PQ || SR and PQ = SR ... (3)

⇒ PQ = SR

(iii) From equation (3), we obtained

PQ || SR and PQ = SR

Clearly, one pair of opposite sides of quadrilateral PQRS is parallel and equal.

Hence, PQRS is a parallelogram.


Q2: ABCD is a rhombus and P, Q, R and S are the mid-points of the sides AB, BC, CD and DA respectively. Show that the quadrilateral PQRS is a rectangle.

Answer:



In ▲ABC, P and Q are the mid-points of sides AB and BC respectively.

∴ PQ || AC and PQ = AC (Using mid-point theorem) ... (1)

Q1: Which one of the following options is true, and why?

     y = 3x + 5 has

(i) a unique solution, (ii) only two solutions, (iii) infinitely many solutions

Answer:

y = 3x + 5 is a linear equation in two variables and it has infinite possible solutions. As for every value of
x, there will be a value of y satisfying the above equation and vice-versa.

Hence, the correct answer is (iii).


Q2: Write four solutions for each of the following equations:

(i) 2x + y = 7 (ii) ∏x + y = 9 (iii) x = 4y

Q1: The cost of a notebook is twice the cost of a pen. Write a linear equation in two variables to represent this statement.

(Take the cost of a notebook to be Rs x and that of a pen to be Rs y.)

Answer:

Let the cost of a notebook and a pen be x and y respectively.

Cost of notebook = 2 ☓ Cost of pen

x = 2y

x − 2y = 0

Q2: Express the following linear equations in the form ax + by + c = 0 and indicate the values of a, b, c in each case:

(i) 2x + 3y = 9.35  


(ii) x - y/5 - 10 = 0
(iii) − 2x + 3 y = 6

(iv) x = 3y
(v) 2x = − 5y
(vi) 3x + 2 = 0

(vii) y − 2 = 0
(viii) 5 = 2x
