Dear Editor
Through the coloumns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the people towards the burning issue of dowry and its ill-effects on our society.
The dowry system is a social evil. In India many of the traditional customs have been given up, but the custom of dowry has not only continued, but flourished over the years. In spite of increase in the literacy rate, education and modernization, we have not been able to eradicate this problem from our society. Even today, daughters are given furniture, crockery, electronic items, jewellery, cars, flats etc. in order to ensure their security. Initially dowry was given to support the new couple, but with the passage of time marriage has become an occasion for blatant selling of the bridegroom. The ill-effects of this problem include the neglect of daughters, sex-selective abortion, female infanticide, and the harassment, abuse etc. When demands for dowry are not met, the bride is subjected to torture, and often even killed.
The dowry system is so deeply rooted in Indian culture, that sometimes one feels that there's going to be no way out. But we have to find measures to eradicate this problem. Get serious about your daughter's education. Encourage her to have a career of her own and earn her own livelihood. Women will have to know their rights.Now-a-days several women's organizations have come into being in order to check this evil.Even our young boys and girls are taking oath not to follow this evil custom. People should realise that others money can't bring happiness in the house. So don’t demand for money in marriage, just ask the girl to come with lots of blessings and happiness. Government should strictly implement laws against this bad dowry system because cases of dowry deaths make nation’s reputation down.
It is high time to initiate action and to save the lives of many women so that our country can feel proud of her daughters too.
Thanking you.
Yours Sincerely,

Dear Ananya
How are you? We are quite well here and hope that you are also sailing in the same boat. Yesterday I read an advertisement in the newspaper issued by the Delhi Fire Service regarding safety measures to be followed at home to prevent fires. I found the information quite useful and want to share the same with you.
Fire break out in a residential apartment or commercial building can result in damaging property and even result in the loss of life of residents or occupants in building. Always keep a fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen and know when and how to use it.Close LPG stove regulator at night or when not in use.Use of multiple adapters should be avoided, as overloaded electrical circuits may cause fires.
Use good quality electrical-fittings and cables in the house. Wear tight-fitting clothes while cooking. Oversized or long clothes can easily catch fire.Keep things that can burn, such as oil, towels, paper,
plastic bags and curtains away from the gas stove. The exit-ways should always be kept clear.
"If accidentally you do catch fire, follow the Stop, Drop, Roll principle. Don't run if your clothing catches fire – stop where you are, drop to the ground, and roll." If water is easily available, then put water on the burning area. I hope you will find the information useful and act upon the advice. Convey my regards to your parents.
Yours affectionately
Kavita Gupta
