What is Anoxygenic Photosynthesis
Anoxygenic photosynthesis is a type of photosynthesis that occurs in some bacteria and archaea, in which oxygen is not produced as a byproduct. Instead, these organisms use other compounds, such as hydrogen or sulfur, as electron acceptors during the process of photosynthesis. Anoxygenic photosynthesis is thought to have evolved before oxygenic photosynthesis, which is the more common type of photosynthesis that occurs in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. Many bacteria and archaea that perform anoxygenic photosynthesis are found in environments where oxygen is scarce, such as in shallow water or in soil.
