Poetic devices used in the poem

Metaphor

The diverging roads symbolize life choices and paths taken.

The word undergrowth stands for the future into which the poet cannot see.

Imagery:

Vivid descriptions of the yellow wood, grassy paths, and undergrowth create a visual image for the reader.

The poet gives a beautiful description of both the roads that morning. He says that they lay equal with none of the leaves turned black by the footsteps of a passerby.

Personification:

The roads are described as if they have qualities of human beings, such as wanting wear.

Symbolism:

The fork in the road represents a decision point in life, and the paths represent different choices or opportunities.

The yellow wood also symbolises the ripe age at which the poet has to make decisions for himself.

Repetition:

The repetition of "I" and "And" in the final stanza emphasizes the personal reflection of the speaker and the continuation of life's journey.

The word 'ages' has been repeated twice in the second line.

Alliteration:

Words like "stood," "sigh," "should," "ever," and "come back" create a musical quality in the poem.

Repetition of 'w' sound in 'wanted' and 'wear'.

Repetition of 'f' sound in 'first' and 'for'.

Assonance:

There is a repetition of the 'o' sound in the words 'roads' and 'yellow'.

Consonance:

Repetition of 'd' sound in the words 'roads', 'diverged' and 'wood'

Simile:

Both the roads have been compared to each other using the words 'as just as fair'
