Q1: How did Gandhi use satyagraha and non-violence at Champaran to achieve his goal?

Answer: The Champaran episode was a landmark in Gandhian style of fighting against the British rule. It was a long drawn but patient and peaceful agitation. The Champaran campaign was an attempt to free poor peasants of Champaran from injustice and exploitation at the hands of Britishers. Gandhi adopted a legal, moral and democratic path of negotiation. He appealed to the concerned authorities but they ignored his's plea.

Gandhiji gave moral courage to peasants and asked them need not fear. He made the peasants aware of their rights and gave them the confidence to fight their own battles. His disobedience movement along with the peasants forced landlords to agree to pay 25% amount due. Finally, his efforts paid off and emancipated the peasants from the clutches of landlords.


Q2: Why was Gandhiji impressed with Rajkumar Shukla's tenacity and determination?

Answer: Gandhiji impressed with Rajkumar Shukla's tenacity and determination because of his style of working and especially his dedication to accomplish his tasks. During the annual convention of Indian National Congress held in Lucknow, he met the poor peasants of Champaran. Rajkumar Shukla accompanied Gandhiji everywhere, even to his ashram and persuaded him to visit Champaran to resolve the peasants' grieves. This firmness and determination impressed Gandhiji and he finally agreed to visit Champaran.




Q3: What made Gandhiji demand 50% refund from British landlords?

Answer: After his arrival at Champaran, Gandhiji met the secretary of the British landlords association to collect the facts. Gandhiji stayed there for seven months and during his stay he tried to meet the Commissioner of Trihut division and the Governor. He tried to present the facts that the agreement between landlords and peasants was a draconian contract and was one-sided. He asked the landlords for 50% repayment. The landlords offered to pay only 25% which Gandhiji accepted to end the deadlock. It was a moral victory for the peasants.


Q4: How did Champaran peasants react when they heard that a Mahatma had come to help them?

Answer: On hearing about a Mahatma had arrived at Champaran to help them, thousands of peasants gathered at Motihari court. They held a demonstration there. The British officials felt powerless after finding the uncontrollable crowd.  


Q5: Why do you think Gandhiji considered the Champaran episode to be a turning point in his life?

Answer: The Champaran episode started a strenuous effort to bring justice for the poor. It was a promulgation of independence against the British colonial rule. This incident brought courage to the masses and was one of the trigger-point to fight for independence in the non-violent fashion. That's why Gandhiji considered the Champaran episode to be a turning point in his life.


Q6: Why did the servants think Gandhiji to be another peasant?

Answer: When Raj Kumar Shukla and Gandhiji arrived at Patna, both reached the house of Rajendra Prasad, a lawyer. He was out of town. His servants knew Shukla as a poor sharecropper from Champaran. Shukla approach Rajendra Prasad earlier to take up the cause of indigo. Gandhiji accompanied Shulka there, servants took him as another peasant. The servants allowed them to enter into the house and stay on the ground.
