Learn English Vocabulary From News Papers - August 3 2017



The Indian Express


Inflation

Inflation fall, slowdown spur RBI to cut rate to 6-year low

meaning: a continuous increase in prices (मुद्रास्फीति,  महँगाई)

Examples:
1. The government's overriding concern is to reduce inflation.
2. Economists measure inflation regularly to know an economy's state.




To avert

Scientists edit genes in human embryos to avert disease

meaning: Turn away, To prevent or ward off (टालना, फेर लेना)

Examples:
1. Talks with top management averted the workers strike.
2. When he focused on her she quickly averted her eyes.


Apex

Apex court upholds conviction of ex-UP chief secy

meaning: the top or highest part of something ( शिखर)

Examples:
1. Everyone was surprised when the actress decided to stop making movies just as she reached the apex of her career.

2. We'll put up a flag when we reach the apex of the  mountain.


Verdict

SC reserves verdict on whether privacy is fundamental right.

meaning: An opinion or judgement (निर्णय, फैसला)

Examples:
1. In Jessica's case, it took jury seven years to reach a verdict.
2. The doctor's verdict was that he was hale and hearty.


Utopia
Ideas: Mark vs Musk, or utopia vs dystopia

meaning: idea place where every thing is perfect, a paradise (आदर्शलोक,  काल्पनिक आदर्श)

Examples:
1. A smart city concept could be a better place to live, but not an utopia

2. Every child's Utopia is living in a fairy land.

(Note: 'dystopia' is just the opposite of 'utopia' i.e. an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad)
