Q1. Enlist the major factors leading to a shortage of fresh water supply.

Answer: Increasing population, rising demands for food and cash crops, increasing urbanization and rising standards of living are the major factors leading to a shortage in supply of freshwater either due to drying up of water sources or water pollution.


Q2. Suggest some means of irrigation to conserve water.

Answer: Some means of irrigation to conserve water are:

a) The canals used for irrigating fields should be properly lined to minimize losses by water seepage


b) Sprinklers effectively irrigate the area by checking water losses through seepage and evaporation.


c) In a dry region with high rates of evaporation drip or trickle irrigation is very useful.


Q3. How are plants useful to us?

Answer: Plants provide us with timber, give shelter to animals, produce the oxygen we breathe, and protect soils. So essential for growing crops, act as shelter belts, help in shortage of underground water, and give us fruits, nuts, latex, turpentine oil, gum, medicinal plants and also the paper.



Q4. ‘Wildlife is a valuable resource. Justify

Answer: Wildlife includes animals, birds, insects, as well as aquatic life forms.

a) They provide us milk, meat, hides and wool. Insects like bees provide us, with honey, help in the pollination of flowers and have an important role to play as decomposers in the ecosystem.

b) The birds feed on insects and act as decomposers as well.

c) Vulture due to its ability to feed on dead livestock is a scavenger and considered a vital cleanser of the environment.

d) So, animals big or small are integral to maintaining balance in the ecosystem.

Answer: Two main climatic factors responsible for soil formation are: Temperature and rainfall.



Q6. Name any two steps that the government has taken to conserve plants and animals.

Answer: Steps taken by the government to conserve plants and animals are :

1. Many national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and bio-reserve are made to protect the plants and animals.

2. Government has made many laws against the indiscriminate killing of wild animals for the illegal trade of their skin and hides.
