Answer: From about 1294 to the time of the French Revolution in 1789, the people of France were expected to strictly follow what were known as ‘
sumptuary laws.’ These laws try to control:
- the behaviour of those considered social inferiors
- prevent them from wearing certain clothes.
- prevent them consuming certain foods and beverages
- prevent them from hunting.
These laws also controlled that a French could buy a type of cloth based on his social rank.
