लोगों द्वारा कही गई प्रसिद्ध बात कहावत बन जाती है | इन्हें लोकोक्ति भी कहते हैं|
इन का अर्थ शाब्दिक ना होकर और ही संकेत करता है| वास्तव में किसी मान्यता, आस्था या अनुभव आदि की अभिव्यक्ति होती है| मुहावरे का प्रयोग तो वाक्यांश के रूप में होता है, परंतु लोकोक्ति का प्रयोग वाक्य के अंत में स्वतंत्र रूप से होता है|
स्वतंत्र रूप में प्रयोग होने वाली और लोगों द्वारा कही गई बात लोकोक्ति कहलाती है|
