TikTok is a Chinese based video-sharing social networking service. It is owned by ByteDance, a Beijing-based company founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming. It is used to create short dance, lip-sync, comedy, and talent videos.

TikTok has taken the social media world by storm and it boasts around 524 million active users worldwide.  In China, where it is known as Duoyin, which has 250+ million active users. was founded in 2014 and enjoyed a steady flow in app downloads and user adoption. On July 6th 2015, reached number one in the iTunes app charts, exploding almost overnight.

In 2016, Chinese tech company Bytedance launched a version of known as Douyin to the Chinese market before introducing it internationally as TikTok in 2017. Understanding the platform's potential, particularly among young digital natives, Bytedance bought and incorporated and it became the version of TikTok we know today.

TikTok was one of the most popular apps of 2018, with a total of one billion downloads worldwide.

Due to its rising popularity and appeal among younger cohorts, TikTok is now available to download in 154 countries.

TikTok has been installed on mobile devices around 800 million times. It uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze users' interests and preferences and based on these results, it offers a personalized content feed for each user.

Videos created on TikTok earn 17 billion average views on a monthly basis.

TikTok earns money by advertising. TikTok users also monetise by being a influencer or selling or promoting products.

TikTok faces criticism because kids get addicted to it. It faced ban in few countries because of showing 'unsolicited content'.  There are no age restrictions and all types of content are available to kids, it is advised parents to keep a watch on their kids accounts and manage their screen time.
