Class 10 Chemistry - Different types of Chemical Reactions
Question: What are different types of chemical reactions?
Answer:
There are several different types of chemical reactions, including:
1. Combination or Synthesis Reaction: In this type of reaction, two or more substances combine to form a single product. The general form of this reaction is A + B → AB.
2. Decomposition Reaction: This type of reaction is the opposite of a combination reaction. Here, a single reactant breaks down into two or more simpler products. The general form of this reaction is AB → A + B.
3. Single Displacement or Substitution Reaction: This type of reaction involves the replacement of one element or ion in a compound by another element or ion. The general form of this reaction is A + BC → AC + B
or
A + BC → BA + C.
4. Double Displacement or Metathesis Reaction: In this type of reaction, the cations and anions of two different compounds switch places, resulting in the formation of two new compounds. The general form of this reaction is AB + CD → AD + CB.
5. Acid-Base or Neutralization Reaction: This type of reaction occurs when an acid reacts with a base to form a salt and water. The general form of this reaction is
HA + BOH → H2O + BA.
6. Redox or Oxidation-Reduction Reaction:
When a substance gains oxygen or hydrogen is removed, such reaction is called oxidation.
When a substance gains hydrogen or oxygen is removed, such reaction is called reduction.
e.g.
A + O₂ → AO₂ (oxidation)
BO₂ → B + O₂ (reduction)
