Chemistry - Acids and Bases - Indicators

CBSE Class 10 - Chemistry - Acids and Bases - Indicators (#class10ChemistryNotes)(#eduvictors)(#cbsenotes)

Questions and Answers

Q1: Why there is a need for indicators to test acids and bases?

Answer: It would be too dangerous to taste a liquid to find out if it was acidic or basic. Chemists use substances or dyes called indicators which change colour or odour when they are added to acids or bases.

Q2: What is an indicator? Give examples of indicators.

Answer:  An indicator is a dye or substance that changes colour or its smell when it is put into acid or a base. An indicator gives different colours in acid and base. Thus an indicator tells us if the given substance is an acid or base by changing its colour. The three common indicators are: Litmus, Methyl orange, phenolphthalein.

Q3: What are different types of indicators?

Environment:
It is the sum total of all external conditions and influences that affect the life and development of an organism, i.e., the environment includes all the physical or abiotic and biological or biotic factors.

Biodegradable Substances:
These are those substances which are broken down into simpler, harmless substances in nature with due course of time by the biological processes such as action of microorganisms like certain bacteria.
Eg. Domestic waste products, urine and faecal matter, sewage, agricultural residue, paper, wood,
cloth and cattle dung.

Non-biodegradable Substances:
Non-biodegradable Substances are those substances which cannot be broken down into simpler, harmless substances in nature. These substances may be in solid, liquid or gaseous form and may be inert and accumulate in the environment or may be concentrated in the food chain and harm the organisms.
Eg. DDT, plastics, polythene bags, insecticides, pesticides, mercury, lead, arsenic, aluminium, radioactive wastes, etc.

Chemistry is that branch of science which deals with the composition, structure and properties of matter. Organic chemistry is predominantly concerned with the reactions that organic molecules undergo. Hydrocarbons are compounds that contain only carbon and hydrogen atoms. Carboxylic acids contain both a carbonyl group (C=O) and a hydroxyl group (–OH) on a terminal carbon. Carboxylic acids, like aldehydes, are terminal functional groups.

Sources Of Energy

CBSE Class 10 - Science - Chapter 14 - Sources Of Energy - Study Points (#eduvictors)(#cbsenotes)

Study Points

Energy:
Whenever a body is capable of doing work, the body is said to possess energy. Thus energy is defined as the ability of a body to do work and the amount of energy possessed by a body is equal to the amount of work it can do when its energy is released.

Energy comes in different forms and one form can be converted to another. For example, if we drop a plate from a height, the potential energy of the plate is converted mostly to sound energy when it hits the ground.

A good source of energy should be:

i) Safe and convenient to use, e.g., nuclear energy can be used only by highly trained engineers with the help of nuclear power plants. It cannot be used for our household purposed.

ii) Easy to transport, e.g., coal, petrol, diesel, LPG etc. Have to be transported from the places of their production to the consumers.

iii) Easy to store, e.g., huge storage tanks are required to store petrol, diesel, LPG etc.
