CBSE Class 10 - Maths - Arithmetic Progressions ( Questions and Answers)

Class 10 NCERT Exemplar Chapter Solutions

Q 1(MCQ): In an AP, if d=-4,an=7 and an=4, then a is equal to

(a) 6

(b) 7

(c) 20

(d) 28

Answer: (d) In an AP, an=a+(n-1)d
⇒ 4=a+(7-1) (-4)
⇒ 4=a+6(-4)
⇒ 4+24=a
∴ a=28

Q 2(mcq): In an AP, if a=3.5,d=0 and n=101, then an will be
(a) 0

(b) 3.5

(c) 103.5

(d) 104.5

Answer: (b) 3.5
For an AP, an =a+(n-1)d=3.5+(101-1)×0
∴ =3.5

Q 3(mcq): The list of numbers are -10,-6,-2,2,.... is

(a) an AP with d=-16

(b) an AP with d=4

(c) an AP with d=-4

(d) not an AP

Answer: (b) The given numbers are -10,-6,-2,2...is
Here, a1 = -10,
          a= -6,
          a= -2
    and a=2...

Since, a- a= -6-(-10)

           = -6+10=4

   a3-a2= -2-(-6)

           =-2+6=4

   a4-a3=2-(-2)
            =2+2=4
Each successive term of given list has the same difference i.e.,4.
So, the given list forms an AP with common difference, d=4.

Q 4(mcq): The first four terms of an AP whose first term is -2 and the common difference is -2 are

(a) -2,0,2,4

(b) -2,4,-8,16

(c) -2,-4,-6,-8

(d) -2,-4,-8,-16

Answer: (c) -2,-4,-6,-8
Let the first four terms of an AP are a,a+d,a+2d and a+3d.
Given, that first term, a=-2 and common difference, d=-2, then we have an AP as follows
     -2,-2,-2,-2+2(-2),-2+3(-2)
= -2,-4,-6,-8

Q1(MCQ): If 3x – 4 (64 – x) = 10, then the value of x is

(a) –266
(b) 133
(c) 66.5
(d) 38

Answer: (d)38
  3x - 256 + 4x =10
  7x = 10 + 256 = 266
  x = 266/7 = 38

Q2: Three consecutive even numbers whose sum is 156 are 51, 52 and 53.
State if the above statement is True or False

Answer: False

Let the three consecutive even numbers be x, x+2, x+4
∴ x + x+ 2 + x+4 = 156
⇒ 3x + 6 = 156
⇒ 3x = 156 - 6 = 150
⇒ x = 150 /  3 = 50
Thus numbers are 50, 51, 52

Q3: Fifteen added to thrice a whole number gives 93. The number is __________.

CBSE Class 9 - Maths - Quadrilaterals (Questions and Answers)

Class 9 NCERT Exemplar Problems and Solutions

Question 1: If angles A,B,C and D of a quadrilateral ABCD, taken in order, are in the ratio 3:7:6:4 then ABCD is a trapezium. Is this statement true? Give reason for your answer.

Solution: Since, the angles are in the ratio 3:7:6:4,

Let these angles be 3x,7x,6x and 4x.

∵Since sum of angles of a quadrilateral is 360°,

∴3x+7x+6x+4x=360°

⇒ 20x=360°

⇒x=18°

∴The angles are:
   ∠A=3×18°=54°,
  ∠B=7×18°=126°,
  ∠C=6×18°=108° and
 ∠D=4×18°=72°

Since ∠A+∠B=54°+126°=180°. Thus, the sum of co-interior angles is 180°formed by lines AD,BC and transversal AB, ∴, AD∥BC.

So,ABCD is a trapezium.

Hence, the given statement is true.

Q1: A force of 200 N acts on a surface of area 10 cm2. Calculate thrust and pressure. How much the pressure changes if the area of contact increases to 50 cm2.

Answer:
Force = 200 N
Area = 10cm2 = 10 x 10-4m2
Pressure (P) = Force ÷ Area
P1 = 200 ÷ 10 x 10-4 = 2 x 105 Pa

New area = 50cm2 = 50 x 10-4m2
P2 = 200 ÷ 50 x 10-4 = 4 x 104 Pa

Change in Pressure = P1 - P2 = 2 x 105   - 4 x 104
                                = 1.6 x 105 Pa

Simple Classification of Quadrilaterals.
For detailed version check at wikipedia

A simple closed figure bounded by four line segments is called quadrilateral.

The sum of (interior) angles of a quadrilateral is 360°- Angle Sum Property of Quadrilateral

A quadrilateral in which one pair of opposite sides is parallel is called trapezium.

A quadrilateral in which both pairs of opposite sides are parallel is called parallelogram.

If one of the angles of a parallelogram is right angle then it is a rectangle.

If all sides of a quadrilateral are equal then it is called rhombus.
