CBSE Class 9 - Cell Biology - 7 Points about Plasmolysis (#cbsenotes)(#eduvictors)

Cell Biology - 7 Points about Plasmolysis

Plasmolysis vs Flaccid vs Turgid
Credits: Wikimedia, Author: LadyOfHats

1. When a living plant cell loses water through osmosis there is shrinkage or contraction of the contents of the cell away from the cell wall. This phenomenon is known as plasmolysis
(plasma → fluid; lysis → disintegration, decomposition).

2. Only living cells, and not dead cells, are able to absorb water by osmosis.

3. Cell walls permit the cells of plants, fungi and bacteria to withstand very dilute [hypotonic] external media without shrinkage.

Short Questions Answers

Q1: Define matter.

Answer: Anything that has mass and occupies space is called matter.

Q2: Write your observation and conclusion for the following:
(a) When few marbles are put in a glass half filled with water.
(b) Ice is kept at room temperature.

Answer:
(a) Take some marbles and put them into the water of glass tumbler one by one. After some time you will notice that the water level crosses the mark and rises. This is because the marbles occupy space. Again weigh the glass with the marbles. You will find that the second mass is greater than the first one. This proves that marbles have mass.

Class 7/8/9/10 - Science - Clean Air: From Donora to Delhi - Can we breathe safely? (#eduvictors)(#cbse-notes)

With the industrial revolution, the human mankind experienced the air pollution for the first time and realized it as a potential threat to human life. The black smoke of locomotives, factories from the industrial towns of England blackened its cities.

In 1950s, the smoke of industrialized Pennsylvania valley in USA made the air murkier. In the small town of Donora, population 14,000, residents suffered eye, nose, and throat irritation and breathing difficulties resulting in 20 deaths.

In 2008, on the 60th anniversary of the event, the town opened the Donora Smog Museum with the
